2 Corinthians 6:16 NLT - As God said: "I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people."
Three stories in Acts that show us the result of God's presence
1. Supernatural ORDER
- Acts 5:3–5 NLT - 3 Then Peter said, "Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. 4 The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren't lying to us but to God!" 5 As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified.
- The account of Ananias and Sapphira is reminiscent of when God was with the Israelites in the exodus. He set His house in order.
- Miriam and Aaron's envy
- Korah's rebellion
- The golden calf
- The Moabite women
- The unbelief inspired by the report of the 10 spies
Understanding the tension between God's love and righteousness
- Points of understanding
- If God is with us, it is no longer business as usual.
- If we order ourselves, God will not have to put us in order.
- Examine your heart, because that is where God is looking.
2. Supernatural MIRACLES
- Acts 5:15–16 NLT - 15 As a result of the apostles' work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter's shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. 16 Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.
- One of the truest indicators of God's abiding presence is the miraculous. This was true for both the Israelites and the early church. Peter's shadow healing the sick was proof of God's presence working through the apostles.
- God frequently upsets the laws of nature to reveal His sovereignty, power, and glory.
- Miracles of healing
- Miracles of provision
- Miracles of deliverance
3. Supernatural ENCOUNTERS
- Acts 5:17–20 NLT - 17 The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them, 20 "Go to the Temple and give the people this message of life!"
- The Israelites were guided by the presence of God. The cloud by day and the fire by night directed them. His presence guided them to the Red Sea, protected them from Pharaoh during the night, and led them through the sea.
- The early church was completely directed by the hand of God. Its members were moved around as He saw fit to accomplish His plan.
What can be done to be God's home
- Prayer has always moved the heart of God.
- Surrender to His will and plan.
- Order your life.
