Psalm 1:1-3 NASB95 - 1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He will be like a tree firmly 'planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.

Three Things We Must Do with God's Word

1. We must LOVE God's Word.

  • "But his delight is in the law of the Lord..."
  • See in the text.
    • Walk with sinners - passive and mindless sin
    • Stand with sinners - mindful agreement with wrong thinking
    • Sit with scoffers - an advocate for wickedness
  • We must become convicted about its truth and accept it humbly.
  • James 1:21 NLT - So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
    • The Greek word for "accept" is dechomai, which means to receive a stranger with warm hospitality, to open your arms to a stranger.
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:13 NLT - Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn't think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God-which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.
  • Most people build their lives on:
    • Popular culture
    • Tradition
    • Reason
    • Feelings

2. We must LEARN God's Word.

  • "And in His law he meditates day and night."
  • Listen to the Word.
  • Read the Word.
    • Commit to a daily diet of reading God's Word.
    • Have a Bible reading plan.
    • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal it as you read it.
  • Study the Word.
  • Talk about the Word.

3. We must LIVE God's Word.

  • "He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers."
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT - 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
  • It corrects our wrong behavior.
  • It teaches us right behavior.
  • It prepares and equips us for every good work.
  • IT MUST BE APPLIED.
    • God's Word is activated by FAITH.
    • Faith is activated by REVELATION.
    • Revelation is activated by MEDITATION.
