Matthew 28:18–20 (NLT) — 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

What Christian discipleship does NOT mean:

  • It does not mean MENTORING
  • It does not mean HIERARCHY
  • It does not mean CONTROL

Discipleship is all about JESUS!

  • Discipleship is Following JESUS
  • Therefore making disciples is “Helping others follow Jesus.”

1. You are invited to LEAVE.

  1. Luke 14:26 (NLT) — 26 “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.

2. You are invited to LEARN.

    1. Matthew 11:28–30 (NLT) — 28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
    2. Learn to think like Christ (our philosophy)
    3. Learn to be like Christ (our character)
    4. Learn to do like Christ (our ministry)

    3. You invited to LOVE.

    1. Academics are all about exchange. Discipleship is all about a relationship.
    2. John 15:15 (NLT) — 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.
    3. John 13:35 (NLT) — 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

    4. You are invited to LEAD.

    1. Matthew 10:1;7-8 (NLT) — 1 Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness. 7 Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!
    2. Luke 6:40 (NLT) — 40 Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.
    3. John 14:12 (NLT) — 12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.
