Genesis 11:31 ESV Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there.

Genesis 12:1 ESV Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you."

1. TRUSTING God builds great teamwork.

  • It takes teamwork to discern and obey the will of God for our lives.
  • Following God sometimes requires trust from one spouse toward the other.
  • Our faith and trust in God will sometimes need encouragement. That's why we are in it together.
    • Jesus sent His disciples out two by two for this very reason.
    • Paul and Silas were together in Philippi.
  • Two people, believing a promise, praying for its fulfillment, is a powerful thing.

2. TRUTHFULNESS builds great teamwork.

  • Genesis 12:11-13 ESV - 11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, "I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, 12 and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife.' Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake
  • Ephesians 4:25 NLT - So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.
  • Abram and Sarah had a problem with deceit.
    • Abram lied to Pharaoh and Abimelech about his wife. Sarah lied to the Lord about laughing.
  • Lying is the intent to deceive. Marriages can't stand on lies.
    • A total fabrication
    • A twisting of facts
    • Withholding facts
  • The power of truth can make a marriage great.
    • A thousand little things unexpressed can cause a marriage to crumble. The weight of unspoken frustrations can crush it.
    • When there is a buildup of undisclosed truth, use wisdom and don't time it all at once.
    • It takes emotional maturity to handle the exchange of truth.

3. TESTIMONY builds great teamwork.

  • Genesis 21:1-2 ESV - 1 The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised. 2 And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him.
  • Genesis 21:6-7 - 6 And Sarah said, "God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me." 7 And she said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."
  • Abraham and Sarah had some difficulty, but overall, it was apparent that God was with them. They wandered around the desert, but somehow got rich. They were old without kids, but God gave them a miracle baby. They were unprotected in hostile territory, but remained unharmed.
  • Reflect together on the goodness of God.
  • Acknowledge that God has been with you.
  • Laugh together - Isaac means "laughter."
