A New Grip

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill
Sunday, Dec 15, 2019

Hebrews 12:12 NLT — So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees.

Three new grips we are going to take:

1. GRAB tightly ...

  • Our confident hope
    • Hebrews 10:23 NLT — Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
    • Our expectations about the future
    • Our confidence before God
    • Our eternal perspective
  • Our devotion to Christ
    • 2 Corinthians 11:3 NLT — But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent. Three parts of devotion — Learn about Him, talk to Him, and listen to Him.
  • Our covenant relationships
    • Proverbs 3:3 NLT — Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Marriage, family, God-ordained friendships

2. HOLD loosely...

  • Possessions
    • 1 Timothy 6:7–8 NLT — 7 After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. 8 So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. The best posture for our wealth is to use it to be a blessing.
    • Proverbs 11:25 NLT — The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.
  • Positions
    • “Life will trash your trophies” — James Dobson
  • Pleasing people

3. LET go...

  • Regrets
    • Every day you must wake up as if it is your first day to live. His mercies are new every morning. Like Paul, you must forget the past and focus on what lies ahead.
    • Philippians 3:13 NLT — No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.
  • Habits
    • Romans 13:12 NLT — The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living.
  • Offenses
    • Psalm 130:3–4 NLT — 3 LORD, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? 4 But you offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear you. Isaiah 43:25 NLT — “I—yes, I alone—will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again.”
