Built To Last

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 (NLT) - 10 Because of God's grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have-Jesus Christ. 12 Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials-gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. 13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person's work has any value. 14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. 15 But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.

1. Build on CHRIST.

  • 1 Corinthians 3:10-11 (NLT) - 10 Because of God's grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have-Jesus Christ.
  • Don't build on the foundation of leaders (Apollos, Paul, Peter).
    • 1 Corinthians 1:12-13 (NLT) - 12 Some of you are saying, "I am a follower of Paul." Others are saying, "I follow Apollos," or "I follow Peter," or "I follow only Christ." 13 Has Christ been divided into factions? Was I, Paul, crucified for you? Were any of you baptized in the name of Paul? Of course not!
  • Don't build on the foundation of religion.
  • Don't build on the foundation of other people.
  • Don't build on the foundation of false expectations.
  • Stay focused on the foundation!
    • Don't build outside of the foundation of Christ. Your marriage, your parenting, your money, your vision, your goals, your aspirations-put it all on Christ!

2. Build with CAUTION.

  • 1 Corinthians 3:12 (NLT) - Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials-gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw.

  • All believers should build on Christ, but we have the freedom to choose the materials.

  • The materials you choose are the BELIEFS that direct your life.
    • Stay close to the blueprints and the foreman.
    • 1 Timothy 1:5 (NLT) - The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.
  • The materials you choose are the ACTIONS that come from the beliefs.
    • There is no "WELL DONE" without WELL DOING.
  • The materials you choose are the MOTIVES that stimulate the actions.

3. Build for what's COMING.

1 Corinthians 3:13-15 (NLT) - 13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person's work has any value. 14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. 15 But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.

  • YOUR HOUSE WILL BE PUT TO THE TEST.
  • Make sure:
    • You are on the foundation.
    • You believe the right thing.
    • You are acting on what you believe.
    • You are doing it with the right motives.
