From Detox to Devotion

Detox empties us, but devotion fills us!

Acts 2:42-47 NIV84: "42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."

We are going to devote ourselves to five things that build our spiritual well-being and usefulness in God's kingdom:

1. We are going to devote ourselves to reading God's Word.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT: "16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work."

  • God's Word is bread for our spirits.
  • God's Word is light for our paths.
  • God's Word is a sword for our battles.

2. We are going to devote ourselves to prayer.

Ephesians 6:18 NIV84: "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints."

3. We are going to devote ourselves to fellowship.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (MSG): "9 It's better to have a partner than go it alone. Share the work, share the wealth. 10 And if one falls down, the other helps, but if there's no one to help, tough! 11 Two in a bed warm each other. Alone, you shiver all night. 12 By yourself you're unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn't easily snapped."

4. We are going to devote ourselves to giving.

5. We are going to devote ourselves to serving.
