I'm Complicated

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NLT) — 23 Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) — 12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

You are TRIUNE

Like God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

  • The Son is visible, The Father and Spirit invisible
  • Your flesh is visible, your soul and spirit invisible
  • The Spirit is sacred and guarded by Jesus
    • Mark 3:28–29 (NLT) — 28 “I tell you the truth, all sin and blasphemy can be forgiven, 29 but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. This is a sin with eternal consequences.”

Like a car

  • Outside is the metal
  • Inside is the engine
  • Behind the wheel is a person
  • WHICH IS THE MOST VALUABLE

Like the Tabernacle

  • The Outer Court is your flesh
  • The Inner Court is your soul
  • The Holy of Holies is your spirit

If God guarded the Spirit, should you guard your spirit? YES!

Understanding each part:

1. FLESH: World-consciousness

  1. 5 senses: How you interact with the world
  2. What does it do?
    1. It craves
    2. It calls
    3. It cries
  3. It has a deal with sin
    1. Romans 8:12–13 (NLT) — 12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. 13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.
  4. IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO RULE

2. SOUL: Self-consciousness

  1. This is your personality
  2. Your soul is the control center
    1. Your mind
    2. Your will
    3. Your emotions

3. SPIRIT: God-consciousness

  1. It was built to commune with God
  2. God is SPIRIT
  3. Components of your spirit
    1. Conscience
    2. Communion
    3. Intuition

How must these three be treated?

1. Outer court - The flesh

  1. The altar
    1. It must be tied down
    2. It must be sacrificed
    3. Romans 12:1 (NASB95) — 1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
  2. The laver
    1. It must be sanctified
    2. It must be washed - When Jesus offered to wash Peter’s feet

2. Inner court - The soul

  1. The table - It must have fellowship
  2. The lamp - It must have illumination

3. Holy place - The spirit

  1. Altar of incense - It must have worship
  2. Ark of the covenant - It must have communion with God
    1. Full of manna - Christ in your heart
    2. Ten commandments - The Words of God
    3. The rod - It must be submitted
