Hebrews 1:1-2

The SON is the HEIR.

The writer of Hebrews starts the book off with, 
The "SON [is] ... the HEIR of all things" (1:2 ESV). Sonship means heirship. His goal in the first two chapters is to show that Jesus was far superior in rank and glory to the prophets or the angels.

Three reasons Jesus is the Son of God (ch. 1):

1. His POSITION is far superior (vv. 2-4).

• Christ created the world.
• Christ redeemed the world.

2. His NAME is far superior (vv. 5-13).

• Christ's name is superior to all names (v. 4). Seven Scripture verses are quoted (vv. 5-13) that prove His name as "SON" is far superior to all of the angels.

3. His WORD is far superior (2:1-4).

• Jesus' word was a word of salvation. It came with signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit!

Seven reasons Jesus is the Son of Man

1. TO RESTORE MAN'S POSITION:

God has a great DESTINY for man. Man was created to be God's joint-heir with Christ, a SON or a DAUGHTER of God.

2. TO RULE AS A SON:

Jesus became a man to become the FIRST MAN TO LIVE AND RULE AS A SON (vv. 6-8).

3. TO DIE FOR EVERY MAN:

Jesus became a man in order to DIE as a man so that He could "taste death for everyone" (v. 9 ESV).

4. TO BRING SONS TO GLORY:

Jesus became a man, not only to pay for man's sins, but to "[bring] many SONS to glory" (v. 10 ESV, emphasis added).

5. TO MAKE US INTO HIS IMAGE:

Jesus became a man in order to make us into His brothers and sisters, in HIS IMAGE.

6. TO DEFEAT SATAN:

Jesus became a man in order to DEFEAT SATAN for His brothers and sisters.

7. TO BECOME A MERCIFUL HIGH PRIEST:

Jesus became a man in order to become EXACTLY like His brothers and sisters so that He could become a "merciful and faithful high priest" (v. 17 ESV).
