James 4:5 (ESV) — 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?

1. Facts we know:

1. God desires us.
2. He is already near.
3. If we seek Him, we will find Him.
   1. Isaiah 55:6 - Seek the Lord while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near. 
   2. Jeremiah 29:13–14 - 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. 14 I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.” 
   3. Deuteronomy 4:29 - But from there you will search again for the Lord your God. And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him. 
   4. Proverbs 8:17 - “I love all who love me. Those who search will surely find me.”
   5. Psalms 145:18 - The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth.

2. What's the problem?

1. We are independent.
2. We pursue other things.
3. We feel ashamed.

3. How to close the gap:

1. James 4:4–10 (NLT) — 4 You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. 5 Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. 6 And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. 9 Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
2. Change your heart.
3. Cleanse your ways.
4. Chase after Him.
