Exodus 34:6–7 (NLT) — 6 The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. 7 I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”
Anyone can achieve success in their lifetime by themselves, but multigenerational success only comes by the hand of God.
The key indicator of multigenerational blessing is GOD
- Education is good
- Inheritance is good
- Character is good
- GOD IS ESSENTIAL
Three lessons from the patriarchs about parenting for legacy:
1. Abraham - Give your kids a MODEL
- When parents just tell their kids what they SHOULD do, without modeling it, it’s destructive. Nothing ruins a kid more than a deeply hypocritical parent
- “Don’t yell at your siblings, but I can yell at you”
- “You should have a better attitude, but don’t mind mine”
- “Read your Bible, but I don’t”
- Three areas Abraham modeled faith for Issac
- SEPARATION of faith
- Abraham had different: VALUES, CULTURE, BELIEFS
- OBEDIENCE of faith
- God’s first instruction concerning this new covenant was for Abraham to circumcise his entire family. This is obedience.
- Kids watch the way we OBEY God.
- SACRIFICE of faith
- Isaac got a first-row seat to watch his dad sacrifice him on the altar. This represents the worship of faith.
2. Issac - Give your kids a MESSAGE
- Isaacs missteps with parenting
- Favoritism
- Rivalry
- Disunity with Rebecca
- Lack of time spent
- One thing he did get right - His WORDS
- What you speak:
- Instruction
- Correction
- Affirmation
- Direction
- Blessing
3. Jacob - Give your kids a METHOD
- Jacob displayed the most wisdom towards life. He knew how to negotiate, strategize, and relate.
- Work Ethic
- Shrewd in business
- Shrewd in relationships
- Strong in leadership
- Your kids will be an extension of what you instill in them
