Renewing Your Mind

I. Text:

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).

A. The human trinity

  • The keyboard is your body. It inputs words and actions.
  • The voice of the body is "FEELINGS."
  • The processor is your mind. It stores and processes actions and reactions. The voice of the mind is "REASON."
  • The screen is your heart. It reflects the feelings of the body and the thoughts of the mind and interprets them into "right" and "wrong." The voice of the spirit is "CONSCIENCE."
    • "As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man" (Proverbs 27:19 ESV).
  • Conscience is where all judgments of reason and feelings are made. It must have the Word to guide it.

B. Eve's sin

"But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ" (2 Corinthians 11:3 NKJV). You cannot trust your body ("good to the eyes") or your mind ("good to make one wise").

"Among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind"
(Ephesians 2:3 ESV).

C. Satan's thoughts

  • Satan uses three main thoughts to hold you captive:
    • Fear: doubt and unbelief
    • Lust: greed and fantasy
    • Pride: reason and control
  • God uses three main thoughts to set you free:
    • Power
    • Love
    • Sound mind

II. Power

A. Satan's thought: "DEFEATED"

"You are weak. You will be overpowered. You cannot stand any more. You are going to fall apart and lose everything."

B. God's Word: "VICTORIOUS"

  • "I am strong": a mind filled with scriptures of victory, authority, and power.
    • "I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you" (1 John 2:14 ESV).
    • "Let the weak say, ‘I am strong'" (Joel 3:10 NKJV).
    • "Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might" (Ephesians 6:10 NKJV).
    • "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13 NKJV).
    • "If God be for us, who can be against us?"
(Romans 8:31 KJV).
    • "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world"
(1 John 4:4 ESV).

III. Love

A. Satan's thought: "ALONE"

"God doesn't love you. God has abandoned you. You are all on your own in this world. God has rejected you and turned His back on you."

B. God's Word: "ACCEPTANCE"

  • Love will assure your thoughts.
    • "Do not be anxious about anything" (Philippians 4:6 ESV).
    • "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Philippians 4:8 ESV).
    • "Perfect love casts out fear" (1 John 4:18 ESV).

IV. Sound mind

A. Satan's lie: "LOST"

"You have no purpose. You are not accomplishing anything. You are drifting through life for no reason. You are confused."

B. God's Word: "PURPOSE"

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad… For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; or if we are of sound mind it is for you"

(2 Corinthians 5:10, 13 NKJV, emphasis added). "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28 NKJV).

V. Summary

  • "I am not weak-I am strong."
  • "I am not alone-I am loved."
  • "I am not lost-I am called."
