Seeing Jesus

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill

Luke 24:28-32 (NLT) - 28 By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, 29 but they begged him, "Stay the night with us, since it is getting late." So he went home with them. 30 As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. 31 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! 32 They said to each other, "Didn't our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?"

We have an opportunity to see Jesus when we are:

At our LOWEST

  • Psalm 34:18 (NLT) - 18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
  • If you are brokenhearted, disappointed, and at the end of yourself, you have an opportunity to see Jesus.

GATHERED with other believers

  • Matthew 18:20 (NLT) - 20 For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.
  • Something about being with other believers causes our hearts to "burn within us."

Bent to BELIEVE

  • Having your heart set to believe, bent to belief. As they were open to understanding, He was able to reveal His Word.

Persistently PRESSING in

  • He was going to continue going, but they persisted that He stay with them.
  • They would have understood a lot and would have made sense of everything that happened, but they wouldn't have seen HIM unless they persisted. This is all about being HUNGRY for HIM.

When we see Jesus:

Luke 24:46-49 (NLT) - 46 And he said, "Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. 47 It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.' 48 You are witnesses of all these things. 49 And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven."

We see His SACRIFICE - The scars in His hands and feet were to prove that He is real and show the extent of His love for us.

We see His SOVEREIGNTY - We really see that God knows everything in advance. Even the tragedies are known beforehand, and He is working them out for our good.

We see His MESSAGE - There is forgiveness of sin for all who repent.

We see His POWER - Wait for the Spirit.
