Set Your Sights on Heaven

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill

Colossians 3:1-4 NLT - 1 Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God's right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 3 For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.

Three things of heaven to set our sights on:

1. Set your sights on the PERSON of heaven.

  • Heaven is a person more than a place.
    • Matthew 23:17, 19 NLT - 17 Blind fools! Which is more important-the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred? ... 19 How blind! For which is more important-the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
  • Heaven is made possible by a person: Jesus.
    • John 11:25-26 NIV - 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
  • Heaven is accessible through a person: Jesus.
    • John 14:4-6 NIV - 4 "You know the way to the place where I am going." 5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
  • Heaven is being with the person: Jesus.
    • John 14:3 NIV - And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

2. Set your sights on the PERFECTION of heaven.

  • This world is NOT perfect!
  • Heaven is PERFECTION.
  • He will make everything NEW.
  • He wants to begin the process of perfection in you NOW.
    • Jesus was PERFECT.
    • He wants to make you perfect inside.
    • Don't just look forward to perfection-let Him work now.
    • Philippians 3:12-14 NLT - I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

3. Set your sights on the PREPARATION of heaven.

  • God prepares for us.
    • Right now, as we speak, God is preparing a place for us.
    • John 14:2-3 NLT - 2 There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.
  • We should prepare for God.

Prepare by:

  • Putting trust in Christ
  • Growing to know Him
  • Investing towards eternity
  • Thinking about it all the time so it directs the steps of our lives
