The Oil

1 Samuel 16:1, 12-13 (NLT) — 1 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.” 12 So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.” 13 So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

Isaiah 61:1 (NLT) — 1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.

Acts 10:38 (NLT) — 38 And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

God’s anointing means:

  1. He has chosen a person.

  2. He has separated them from the rest.

  3. He has filled them with His Spirit.

  4. He has empowered the gifts already present within them and given them gifts they never had.

1 John 2:20 (NIV84) — 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
