The Perfect Prayer Partner

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill
Wednesday, Nov 2, 2016

Have you ever had a prayer partner, someone you felt comfortable praying with? God intended for us to always have a prayer partner.

"What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:11-13 ESV, emphasis added).

"Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere" (Ephesians 6:18 NLT, emphasis added).

"But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit" (Jude 1:20 ESV, emphasis added).

"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words" (Romans 8:26 ESV, emphasis added).

1. He speaks TO US.

  • When people say they heard God, they mean they heard the Holy Spirit.
  • He is the agent of communication to our spirit.
  • If we disregard the Holy Spirit and act like He is nonessential, we will not be able to hear from God, because the Holy Spirit is the God we hear.
  • Here are some ways He talks to us:
    • Impressions
    • Divine knowing
    • Dreams and visions
    • Still, small voice

2. He speaks WITH US.

  • Agreement is such an important word when we are praying.
  • God loves agreement.
    • Agreeing with other Christians
    • Agreeing with the Spirit, which is even more important
      • According to God’s will: How do we know the will of God unless the Spirit in us tells us?
      • Strength in numbers: We stand before God, with God.

3. He speaks THROUGH US.

  • Whether we know it or not, the Holy Spirit often speaks through us.
  • "And when you are brought to trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how to defend yourself or what to say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said" (Luke 12:11-12 NLT).
  • He speaks through us to God

4. He speaks FOR US.

  • "And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will" (Romans 8:26-27 NLT).
  • "For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious" (1 Corinthians 14:2 NLT).
