The Power of Pattern

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill
Sunday, Feb 24, 2019

Philippians 3:17 NLT - Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example.

**1 Corinthians 11:1 NLT **- And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.

1 Timothy 4:12 NLT - Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.

The word example is the word tupos in Greek. It translates to "the mark of a stroke; a print." The imagery is that of a mark that is left behind after a stamp leaves the paper.

5 Ways to Leave an Impression

1. In our SPEECH

Ephesians 4:29 NLT - Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Good speech is what you don't say.

  • Disloyal - gossip, slander
  • Dishonest - lying, exaggerating, manipulating truth
  • Destructive - critical, harsh, demeaning

Good speech is what you do say (e.g., truth, encouragement, hope).

2.In our LIFESTYLE

1 Corinthians 4:16–17 NLT - 16 So I urge you to imitate me.
17 That's why I have sent Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord. He will remind you of how I follow Christ Jesus, just as I teach in all the churches wherever I go.

Lifestyle

  • Your actions
  • Your rhythms
  • Your values
  • Your attitude

3. In our LOVE

John 13:34–35 NLT - 34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.

Agape - selfless love

  • Your compassion and empathy
  • Your forgiveness and mercy
  • Your kindness
  • Your generosity

4. In our FAITH

Hebrews 12:1 NLT - Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith...

  • What you believe - your doctrine
  • The endurance of your faith
  • The measure of your faith

5.In our PURITY

**2 Timothy 2:21 NLT **- If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.

External purity - what you abstain from

Internal purity - motives, humility, meekness, etc.
