The Rise of the Spiritual Man

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill
Sunday, Jan 3, 2016

1 Corinthians 2:12-3:3 (NIV84): "12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.15 The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment: 16 'For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?' But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly-mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?"

The Situation:

1. Unspiritual people

  • 1 Corinthians 2:14: "The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."
  • He is dead spiritually.
  • He cannot accept things that come from God's Spirit.
  • He sees spiritual things as foolishness.
  • He is blinded by the God of this world: 2 Corinthians 4:4 (NIV84): "4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

2. Spiritual people

  • 1 Corinthians 2:15-16 "The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment: 16 'For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?' But we have the mind of Christ."
  • The spiritual man is alive on the inside by the Spirit of God.
  • When surrendered to the Spirit, he receives the mind of Christ and can understand all kinds of things that the natural man cannot. The Spirit that searches the mind of God lives inside.

3. Carnal people

  • 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 "1 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly-mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?"

The Solution

1. We are going to fast.

2. We are going to feast.

  • Feast on the presence of God.
  • Feast on the Word of God.
  • Feast on the fellowship of believers.

3. We are going to fervently pray.

The Strategy

1. Set your objective.

2. Decide what you're going to do.

  • Ways to fast
    • Total fast
    • Dietary fast
    • Partial fast
    • Soul fast

3. Expect great things.

Prayer services: Monday-Friday at 6:00 a.m. and Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
