The Secret Sauce

"As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord's feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, 'Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.' But the Lord said to her, 'My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.'"

Luke 11:1 NLT: "Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, 'Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.'"

Here are five things Jesus got from prayer that WE ALL NEED!

1. Jesus made DECISIONS in prayer.

  • Big decisions require prayer.
  • God really wants to be involved in our decision-making process.
  • Jesus was about to make the biggest decision of church history. He was selecting the 12 men who would become the pillars of the faith.
  • "One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Here are their names" (Luke 6:12-13 NLT).
  • What's the number one decision you need to make in your life right now?

2. Jesus received DIRECTION in prayer.

  • "Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not to leave them. But he replied, 'I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent.' So he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea" (Luke 4:42-44 NLT).
  • How flexible is your agenda to accommodate what God would have you do?

3. Jesus was TRANSFIGURED in prayer.

  • "About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white" (Luke 9:28-29 NLT).
  • We are changed in prayer.
  • Prayer pulls out the best in us.

4. Jesus received POWER in prayer.

"But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer. One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby. (It seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord's healing power was strongly with Jesus" (Luke 5:16-17 NLT).

5. Jesus was HEALED in prayer.

"As soon as Jesus heard the news he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns... . Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone"
