The Spirit of Giving

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill
Sunday, Dec 13, 2015

Acts 20:35 NLT: “35 And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed [makarios: joy of participating in the divine kingdom] to give than to receive.’ ”

2 Corinthians 9:1–2, 5–7 NLT: “1 I really don’t need to write to you about this ministry of giving for the believers in Jerusalem. 2 For I know how eager you are to help, and I have been boasting to the churches in Macedonia that you in Greece were ready to send an offering a year ago. In fact, it was your enthusiasm that stirred up many of the Macedonian believers to begin giving... . 5 So I thought I should send these brothers ahead of me to make sure the gift you promised is ready. But I want it to be a willing gift, not one given grudgingly. 6 Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’ ”

The Joy of Generosity

  • Joy comes when you meet a need.
  • Joy comes when you plant a seed.
    • John 4:36 NLT: “36 The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!”
  • Joy comes when you partner with God.
  • Joy comes when you are a part of something bigger than yourself.
  • Joy comes when you see the harvest.
    • Isaiah 53:11 NLT: “11 When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.”
