The Table

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill

Acts 2:42–46 (NLT) — 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—

The table is about relationships.

Ephesians 4:3–6 (NLT) — 3 Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. 4 For there is ONE body and ONE Spirit, just as you have been called to ONE glorious hope for the future. 5 There is ONE Lord, ONE faith, ONE baptism, 6 and ONE God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all.

The table is about remembrance.

Luke 22:19 (NLT) — 19 He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.”

Luke 24:30–31 (NLT) — 30 As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. 31 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared!

The table is about reaching.

Luke 14:12–14 (NLT) — 12 Then he turned to his host. “When you put on a luncheon or a banquet,” he said, “don’t invite your friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors. For they will invite you back, and that will be your only reward. 13 Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14 Then at the resurrection of the righteous, God will reward you for inviting those who could not repay you.”
