Deuteronomy 4:9-13 (NLT) - 9 "But watch out! Be careful never to forget what you yourself have seen. Do not let these memories escape from your mind as long as you live! And be sure to pass them on to your children and grandchildren. 10 Never forget the day when you stood before the Lord your God at Mount Sinai, where he told me, 'Summon the people before me, and I will personally instruct them. Then they will learn to fear me as long as they live, and they will teach their children to fear me also.' 11 You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while flames from the mountain shot into the sky. The mountain was shrouded in black clouds and deep darkness. 12 And the Lord spoke to you from the heart of the fire. You heard the sound of his words but didn't see his form; there was only a voice. 13 He proclaimed his covenant-the Ten Commandments-which he commanded you to keep, and which he wrote on two stone tablets."
Deuteronomy 5:25-26 (ESV) - 25 "Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die. 26 For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived?"
God's Ten Audibly Delivered Pillars of Right Living
First five deal with God:
1. Make me FIRST in your life. I will not be SECOND or SHARED.
- Like a wife that does not want to be one of the crowd or prioritized last, God will either be first or be nothing.
- This is reflected in the LOVE OF OUR HEART.
- Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (NLT) - 4 "Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. 5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength."
- This is reflected in the SOURCE OF OUR HOPE.
2. I am BIGGER than your wildest imaginations. Don't put Me in a man-made box!
3. My name is special. Don't leverage it for your empty PROMISES, fits of rage, or MANIPULATIONS.
4. Prove you are not a SLAVE by honoring the SABBATH.
- Deuteronomy 5:15 (ESV) - 15 "You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day."
- When you obey the Sabbath, it helps you keep God first in your heart.
- When you obey the Sabbath, it keeps you living at rest!
5. Prove you understand AUTHORITY by honoring your dad and mom.
- The most tangible way to honor authority is to honor your parents. It starts there. If someone cannot honor their parents, they cannot honor any authority in their life. If a child does not honor their parents, they will never know how to honor authority.
- Teach your kids to honor you. If they can't learn that lesson, they cannot honor any authority.
Second five deal with your neighbor:
6. Don't violate the boundary of LIFE. It is My gift to each human and is off limits.
- Jesus stepped up the game: Matthew 5:21-22 (ESV)
7. Don't violate the boundary of MARRIAGE. It is sacred and off limits.
- God oversees the covenant between a man and a woman, and you are strictly forbidden to violate it.
- Jesus stepped up the game: Matthew 5:27-28 (ESV)
8. Don't violate someone else's PROPERTY. It's theirs!
- When you take what someone else has been given, it shows you are not thankful for what God has given you.
9. Don't violate someone else's REPUTATION with gossip and lies. It could destroy their name.
- Never be the source of ruining another's good name because of your opinion or dislike of them.
10. COMPARISON and ENVY will poison your soul. Stop looking over the fence.
Luke 10:25-28 (NLT) - 25 One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: "Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 Jesus replied, "What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?" 27 The man answered, "'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' And, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" 28 "Right!" Jesus told him. "Do this and you will live!"
