Unlocking the Hand of Generosity

Acts 4:31–37 (NIV84) — 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. 34 There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need. 36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

1. The generosity of God

2. The reality of eternity

3. The presence of the Holy Spirit

4. The needs of people above our wants

Luke 3:11 (NLT) — 11 John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”

5. The unity of our hearts and minds

2 Chronicles 30:12 (NLT) — 12 At the same time, God’s hand was on the people in the land of Judah, giving them all one heart...

Other verses:

Galatians 6:10 (NLT) — 10 Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.

James 2:15–16 (NLT) — 15 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, 16 and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?

1 John 3:16–18 (NLT) — 16 We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person? 18 Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.

Romans 12:13 (NLT) — 13 When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

1 Timothy 6:18 (NLT) — 18 Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.
