What Happened at Pentecost

Acts 2:1–4 ESV — 1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Three Elements of Pentecost

1. We became a NATION

  1. At Sinai on Pentecost, Israel became a NATION. In the upper room on Pentecost, the CHURCH BECAME A NATION!
  2. During this season, we have experienced what it feels like to be APART. Now we must experience what it feels like to be TOGETHER.
  3. The church was meant to be TOGETHER.
    1. Moses wanted every man, woman, and child to be able to go out and worship.
    2. The psalmist said how good and pleasant it is when brethren dwell TOGETHER in unity.
    3. Jesus prayed that we would be ONE, as He and the Father are one.
    4. Paul said, “Make my joy complete by being of one mind and one heart.”
    5. Acts 1 — They were together every day.
    6. Acts 2 — They were all together in one place.
  4. They were TOGETHER in PERSON.
  5. They were TOGETHER in PRAYER.
  6. They were TOGETHER in EXPECTATION.

2. We received the SPIRIT.

  1. At Sinai on Pentecost — The wedding gift was the LAW.
  2. At the upper room — The wedding gift was the SPIRIT!
    1. Ephesians 1:13–14 NLT — 13 And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. 14 The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.
  3. We are now UNDER the authority of the SPIRIT. What God wrote in stone at Sinai, He wrote in our hearts by the Spirit.
  4. The Spirit brings:
    1. Gifts
    2. Offices
    3.  Fruits
  5. The Spirit is what gives us our UNITY.

3. We were released into HARVEST.

  1. Shavuot, or Feast of Weeks, had everything to do with HARVEST.
  2. There is a lot of speculation about what season we are in as the church, but one thing I’m certain of, we are in harvest!
  3. Harvest means:
    1. The grain is RIPE. People are ready!
    2. There is limited TIME. It won’t always be harvest season.
    3. We need HELP. Jesus prayed that there would be laborers in the field.
    4. We need TRAINING. There are better ways than others to reap the harvest.
  4. Peter preached and 3,000 people were converted. It triggered the starting of harvest.
