Wisdom is My Wingman

Bgroup Lesson Aug 04

Big Idea: Did you know that on average you make 35,000 decisions a day? What time do you wake up? What do you eat throughout the day? Where you will go, who you will talk to, what will you invest your time & energy into? Decision after decision, choice after choice. Don’t you wish you had an advisor to assist you with some of those decisions to ensure you make the right one? The book of Proverbs speaks about wisdom, the perfect wingman to assist us with life's decisions. Let’s dive in!

Key Scriptures:

1 Kings 3:3; 5; 7-12 (NLT) Solomon loved the LORD and followed all the decrees of his father, David, except that Solomon, too, offered sacrifices and burned incense at the local places of worship. That night the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!” “Now, O LORD my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?” The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!

1. The Crisis of Wisdom

1 Kings 3:7-8 (NLT) …but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted!

Solomon was being handed the reins of a new and thriving Kingdom. He was chosen over his brothers, and the pressure was on. He knew he needed help to lead the people entrusted to him. If you don’t see yourself as in need of wisdom, you have a serious problem. Folly waits for you!

Some key indicators of folly:

  • You don’t value wisdom.
  • You repeat mistakes and refuse to learn.
  • You speak but never listen.
  • You only trust your own instincts.
  • You belittle the penalty of sin.

Discussion Questions: Would you consider yourself a decisive person? Or do you vacillate between options for fear of making a mistake? Do you seek counsel or advice from others when making big decisions? Or do you rely solely on yourself (your “gut”, your experiences, your knowledge, etc.)? Are you able to receive feedback from others in order to prevent poor decisions? Have you ever asked the Lord for help when facing a difficult decision?

2. The Costliness of Wisdom

Wisdom is mentioned several times in the scriptures as being the most important thing. Wisdom has value but it also brings value!

  • It’s the most IMPORTANT - Proverbs 4:7–9 (NLT) Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. If you prize wisdom, she will make you great. Embrace her, and she will honor you. She will place a lovely wreath on your head; she will present you with a beautiful crown.
  • It’s the most VALUABLE - Proverbs 3:13–15 (NLT) Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. For wisdom is more profitable than silver, and her wages are better than gold. Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
  • It’s the most HELPFUL - Proverbs 8:22;30 (NLT)  The LORD formed me from the beginning, before he created anything else. I was the architect at his side. I was his constant delight, rejoicing always in his presence.

Discussion Questions: Would you say wisdom is something you pursue or try to cultivate in your life? Would you say wisdom is something you value? Do you seek the wisdom of God when faced with a decision or choice? Can you share a time when wisdom from the Lord helped you make the right decision?

3. The Clarity of Wisdom

  • Wisdom is a Perspective
    • Wisdom can offer one solid thing - ELEVATION - It’s a higher perspective.
    • Wisdom is “seeing things from God’s perspective”. It’s not just a higher perspective, it’s the PERFECT perspective.
    • Wisdom is simply getting up where He is and seeing from His perspective.
  • Wisdom is a Presence
    • Lady Wisdom
      • “Listen as Wisdom calls out! Hear as understanding raises her voice!” (Proverbs 8:1)
      • Wisdom isn’t distant—it’s present, calling, relational, and near to those who listen.
    • Gift from God
      • “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.” (James 1:5)
      • “I will give you a wise and understanding heart…” (1 Kings 3:12)
      • You don’t create wisdom—you receive it from God as a gift.
    • Wisdom Lives in Christ and the Spirit
      • “In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:2b–3 (NLT) — I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. 3 In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
      • “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding…” Isaiah 11:2 (NLT) — 2 And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
      • Jesus is the fullness of wisdom, and the Holy Spirit is the ongoing voice of wisdom in your life.
  • Wisdom is a Practice
    • Wisdom is not wisdom until it’s applied!
    • It helps you to take ACTION! If there is no action, then you don’t have wisdom yet.
    • The actions you will notice
      • Wise judgements
      • Wise organization
      • Wise creativity
      • Wise relationships
      • Wise vision
      • Wise words

Discussion Questions: Can you share an instance when your perspective regarding a situation or decision was wrong or incomplete? Do you believe the Lord will give you wisdom for every decision you face? How can you practically apply the gift of wisdom in your life?

4. The Chase for Wisdom

  • To get wisdom, you must:
    • Recognize the crisis – You’re small, under pressure, and don’t know your way.
    • Start with God – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
    • Ask for it – “If anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask.” (James 1:5)
    • Walk in it – Apply it, step by step. Not just hear it—do it.

Conclusion

We all need wisdom! Wisdom starts with the fear of the Lord, meaning you can’t have wisdom unless you start with God. The journey begins with God!
