The Bigger Story

B-Group Lesson Part 2 of 3

Everything Begins and Ends with Jesus

The Bigger Story

Genesis 1:1-5

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

INTRO

If you were here last week we discussed what makes a good story, and identifying our own story. As we continue on this journey of understanding our story we need to talk about THE STORY. As we found out last week our story hinges on the writing of the greatest author that has written and is writing the greatest story! Now that we are learning to have a grasp on our own stories it’s time to lean into how our lives fit into God’s story, because the reality is that if you don’t know what story you’re in you won’t know what story to live out.

Do you know how incredibly awesome the Bible is? If you don’t let’s watch this video to find out:

What is your first thought after watching this video? What did you learn that you didn’t know before?

Transition Statement: Did you know over 60% of your generation has never even read a verse from the Bible? You see the Bible is the foundation for THE STORY God is writing. Genesis 1:1-5 gives us a glimpse that he is THE CREATOR, and as He creates he takes was was nothingness, darkness, and empty and begins to fill it. Just like He wants to fill our lives.

God’s Word forms our lives

Genesis 1:1-2a / 2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” 2 Timothy 3:16

God’s word brings our chaos into order. It teaches how to live out lives that are pleasing to God.

God’s Word fills our lives

 Genesis 1:2

But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4

Reading and hearing the Word begins to feed our souls and satisfy the emptiness that could not be filled by the things of this world.

God’s Word makes our lives function

Genesis 1:3-5 / Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet  and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105

You cannot function in the dark. God’s Word illuminates your life so that you can begin to take steps in the right direction and not just believe in Him, but live for him day by day.

CONCLUSION

This year we want to read the Bible together as a youth ministry. Whether you have ever read the whole Bible before or have never read a single verse outside of John 3:16 we are all going on a journey to read the Bible together! As we break into our small groups let’s discuss what you learned about God’s Word and THE STORY He is writing, and put together a plan to read God’s Word this year.

Bgroup Questions

  1. What is the thing that surprised you most about the video today? Any takeaways?
  2. If the Word of God seems so important, then why does it go unread for so many Christians?
  3. What are some ways we as a group are going to read the Bible every day this year?
TAKE ACTION: Take time to put together a plan on how you will read the Bible with your friends and leader this year every day.
