Scripture: Psalm 1:1-3, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”
Preparation: Ask different people to read the following verses:
- James 1:22, James 2:18, 2 Thessalonians 3:10
- Proverbs 14:23, Proverbs 16:3, Proverbs 21:25
- Galatians 6:9, Colossians 3:23-24
Icebreaker: What was your dream job when you were a kid? What vocation did you think was great?
The Bible has two tensions: FAITH and WORK. The beautiful part is that we need both in order to do what God has called us to do.
1. For Christians, Work Is An Expectation
- James 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
- James 2:18, “But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
- 2 Thessalonians 3:10, “For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.” The Bible is very clear, we are saved by faith and not by works.
- The Bible is also very clear that a faith that saves is a faith that works. God wants us to serve Him and to serve others!
2. For Christians, Work Is A Blessing
- Proverbs 14:23, “In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.”
- Proverbs 21:25, “The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor.”
- Proverbs 16:3, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
- Tell and remind yourself that you get to do this, not that you have to do this. Work hard so that the Lord can bless us and so we can be a blessing to others.
3. For Christians, Work Is A Witness
- Colossians 3:23-24, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
- Galatians 6:9, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
- When others see that your faith even affects your attitude at work, that is when Jesus Christ becomes real to them. When we treat work as a witness, then your job becomes your mission field and you are the missionary.
Challenge:
Plan a LOVE LA serve project for Saturday, March 10!
As a BGroup, what is something we can do for our community?
- Pick up trash
- Clean up a widow’s home
- Visit a nursing home
- Bring donuts to a Police or Fire Station
Faith and Action are both needed so let’s ask God to help us have Faith in Action!
