Three Red Letter Questions

B-Group Lesson Part 10 of 10

Big Idea: When Jesus discipled people, he didn’t just make profound statements. He also asked questions to provoke thought. We are going to look at 3 important questions that Jesus asked after His resurrection.

Key Scriptures:

John 20:15-16 (NLT) 15 “Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” 16 “Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”).

Luke 24:15-19 (NLT) 15 As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. 16 But God kept them from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. 18 Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” 19 “What things?” Jesus asked.

Luke 24:36-38 (NLT) 36 And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. 37 But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost! 38 “Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt?

Main Points

Jesus is ALIVE, and one day you and I are going to physically see Him. The following questions help us open our eyes and see Him spiritually.

Red-Letter Question #1
Who are you looking for?

Jesus came so you and I don’t have to stay stuck in our past. We get to live free from the pain of past trauma and hurt. Each of us has a story of when Jesus entered the room and we looked up.

Discussion Question:
When did you first choose to have a relationship with Jesus? What was your life like before and how has your life changed since then?

Red-Letter Question #2
What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?

This question aims to pull us out of our preoccupation with the present. It is so easy to get caught up in today’s troubles, but our focus should remain the same. No matter the issues or problems we face, when Jesus becomes the primary focus, He also becomes the answer.

Discussion Question:
Share a testimony of the goodness of God in your life in the middle of a hardship, loss, or unforeseen circumstance. What brought you back to the faithfulness of Jesus?

Red-Letter Question #3
Why are you frightened and your hearts filled with doubt?

Jesus wants to pull you out of your doubt about the future. People doubted Jesus throughout the scriptures, but when Jesus showed up, the storms ceased. He quieted the doubts of those around Him while He was on earth and He is still strengthening our faith today.

Discussion Question:
Can you share a time when your faith was shaken and how you overcame doubt?

Actions Steps:

This week is a great time to reflect on the question, “What do you really love? Do you love me (Jesus) more than these?”

  1. More than earthly things?
  2. More than relationships?
  3. More than yourself?

John 21:14-15 (NLT) 14 This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead. 15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.
